Camp SPARK is a hands-on marketing camp for middle school students. Throughout the week, students will explore the marketing mix, analyze real-world marketing strategies, and develop digital materials.

Students will film and edit their own advertisements using professional equipment, create digital promotions like flyers and infographics, and gain experience in data analysis and market research skills.

By the end of the week, each student will have developed a comprehensive written report and a professional pitch deck, which they will formally present before a panel of judges and parents, honing their public speaking, creativity, and collaboration skills.

No previous experience is required. Beyond marketing fundamentals, students will engage in games, teamwork challenges, and a field trip to the Carlmont Shopping Center, where they will observe real-world marketing in action.

Carlmont DECA students and business interns will be presenting lesson and mentoring students throughout the week.

Q: What is the difference between Camp SPARK and the Business & Tech Camp? 

A: Camp SPARK is for marketing and students are focused on developing a marketing plan and creating digital advertisements. On the other hand, the Carlmont DECA Business & Tech Camp is focused on business and technological skills, where students will build a startup business plan and work with data.

Q: My child is interested, but they don’t have previous experience with marketing. Can they still participate?

A: Yes!! No prior experience is necessary. All we ask is that students are excited to learn and come with a positive attitude.

Q: My child wants to come to the camp, but they are nervous about public speaking and/or working in a group. Is that okay?

A: Yes; this camp is a fantastic opportunity to learn public speaking skills and our mentors will do public speaking lessons and practice time with the students. There will also be an instructor working with each group to ensure that they stay on track and to guide them through the process.

Q: Do parents get to attend the final presentations?

A: Yes!! After the students’ celebration, we invite all family/friends to come watch your student’s presentation. We will also provide refreshments for everyone.

Q: What business skills will the camp work on?

A: We will work on public speaking, marketing skills, leadership, video filming and editing, graphic design, spreadsheet skills, data analysis, and much more.

Q: What is DECA?

A: DECA is an international organization of school clubs that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. In addition, DECA provides the opportunity for students to compete at regional, state, and international levels.

Q: Who are the instructors?

A: The camp is led by Carlmont DECA members. They have all been trained to teach the students marketing, filming and video editing, spreadsheet skills, and how to create & pitch a marketing plan. There will also be an adult supervisor present at the camp.
